U. S. Flag Retirement Program

New York State Association of Counties (NYSAC) is partnering with NACo (National Association of Counties) to conduct a new national campaign to support flag etiquette with counties taking the lead in ensuring a dignified retirement for the U.S. flag, and allowing citizens to conveniently and respectfully recycle their flags.

St. Lawrence County residents wanting to properly retire American flags can now drop off torn and tattered flags at the St. Lawrence County Court House located at 48 Court Street, Canton, New York.

An official U.S. Flag Disposal Box will be located in the area outside the Board of Legislators’ Chambers. This area is located near the County Clerks and Treasurer’s Offices. If larger flags do not fit in the box, they can be dropped off inside the Board Office.

The contents of the box will be collected, as needed, by St. Lawrence County’s Veterans’ Services Director and taken to the American Legion Post 68 in Norwood. This group properly retires flags in a ceremony held once a year on Flag Day.
